Update March 26, 2020

CBP is no longer accepting requests for additional days for payment. CBP will retain the right to allow additional days for narrow circumstances, including a physical inability to file entry or payments, due to technology outages or port closures. If you are an importer that has already requested duty extensions, please follow these directions.

March 20, 2020

As a result of the COVID-19 / Coronavirus pandemic and its effect on importers, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has created a program and is now accepting requests for payment extensions on duties owed to U.S. Customs. Importers are directed to send requests by email to otentrysummary@cbp.dhs.gov. A Federal Register notice is still to come with more detail. Some rumors include granting a 90-day extension for duty payments, which will come by Presidential proclamation. and extending time frames to present increased bonds where an importer has been issued a bond insufficiency notice. Currently the requests are done on a case-by-case basis.

According to a Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg Trade Report, “CBP has already granted a number of such requests, although questions remain about the duration of the delays and the process by which CBP will grant them.”
