FMC scrutinizing demurrage fees related to port congestion

WASHINGTON — As part of a broader report on U.S. port congestion due this summer, federal maritime regulators will outline whether the increase in demurrage charges hitting shippers are unreasonable, and outline potential remedies.

FederalMaritimeCommissionSealThe U.S. Federal Maritime Commission began receiving an uptick in shipper complaints over demurrage charges on all coasts a year ago, but the number of complaints has ramped up in recent months with the buildup of West Coast port congestion, Mario Cordero, the agency’s chairman, told JOC.com.
