Greece Warms to Shipping Sector

ATHENS — It’s been a little more than three months since the inaugural statements of the new Greek government. In February, Greek shipowners were in the firing line because of their tax privileges.The Greek government is in advanced talks with COSCO to sell a 51% stake in the port of Piraeus to the Chinese conglomerate. Also, the lines of communication between the Greece’s government and shipowners are wide open, while a large amount of Greece’s infrastructure – such as 14 public airports – might soon be offered to bidders.

The strengthening of short-sea shipping is among the main priorities of the EU’s Maritime Transport Policy until 2018.
