Industry advocates call for container weight regulations to be clarified on national level

International Maritime Organization‘s new rule has the operators and shippers concerned on how individual countries will provide the required verified gross mass (VGM) of containers prior being loaded.

This rule was applied as an amendment to the International Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulation. It goes into effect on July 1, 2016.

American Shipper recently conducted interviews with different points of view in the situations, including the Federation of European Private Port Operators (FEPORT) and the U.S. Coast Guard’s. All interviews concur that more clarity is required for the regulation to go into effect by July 1, 2016.
