Inspection Time

Every year, The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) International Roadcheck inspects vehicles across North America.  This year, the roadcheck is scheduled for June 5-7, 2018. International Roadcheck is a CVSA program with participation by the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (Mexico).  This inspection of buses and trucks takes place for 72 hours in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.  This International Roadcheck is the largest enforcement program of commercial motorized vehicles in the world and has been taking place since 1988.

During this inspection period, an average of 17 buses and trucks are inspected every minute.

Last year DOT’s annual road check focused on The Hours-of-Service (HOS) compliance.  With the ELD mandates having gone into affect this year, this focus will remain a top priority in 2018.  Last year, this requirement was the number one violation among drivers.  Nearly 40% of those drivers put out of service during the inspection were in violation of the Hours-of-Service (HOS) requirements.

During the inspection, DOT officers conduct the North American Standard Level 1 Inspection which includes a 37 step procedure.  Officers will review driver operations along with the vehicle’s mechanics.  If a violation is found, then the driver or vehicle will be put out of service; they will not be allowed to operate until corrections are made.

Tightened Capacity

Many drivers, even those that are operating compliantly, will choose to take this week off to avoid the inspections and the delays they cause.  As a result, shippers and brokers should expect tightened capacity in a market that is already constrained.
