New Tax Imposed for U.S. – Canada Freight?

As some of you may have heard, there is a proposal being kicked around in Washington that would take the Harbor Maintenance Fee (HMF) that is currently paid on containerized ocean freight arriving into the U.S. and apply an equal fee to those companies that import product in containers across our northern and southern boarders via truck and rail.

This has outraged the Canadian government and they have said they will not accept this and if this does happen, they will pass a fee in kind for U.S. goods headed northbound into Canada.

Border-crossingHMF is currently assessed at 0.125% (0.00125) on the value of the imported merchandise.
