New York Shipping Association Hires 300

Shortages of International Longshormen’s Association labor during the 2013 summer vacation season contributed to gridlock at port terminals. Things are going more smoothly this year. Workers scheduled to take early retirement agreed to stay on until October, and summer vacations are being limited. Meanwhile, employers are hiring workers to replace retirees and fill other slots.

The multi-step hiring process includes interviews and scoring of applicants, pre-qualification by the Waterfront Commission, certification by the commission of workers who have passed physical exams and obtained TWIC security cards and hiring by employers.
